Erm... why aren't they speaking up?

If you want everyone in your team to speak up, you might need to do something about the gaping uncertainties that cause people to hesitate or clam up... 🫣 😬 🤐

Here are 5 questions worth tackling with your team, to get you started. Perhaps at the beginning of an important conversation. Or perhaps as you head into the next 90 days of experimenting and growing...

  1. If I have something to say, when should I say it?
  2. If I have a different perspective, how should I raise it?
  3. When I voice an opinion, what will happen to it?
  4. If I disagree, how will you respond?
  5. How do I know when you’re genuinely open to other ideas… versus when you just want me to shut up and do as you’ve asked?

These are useful questions to talk through as a group - to align around expectations. Each of them represents the ambiguities that often lead people to bite their tongue.

If you’re a leader, perhaps these questions will test your transparency and consistency about these things. Are you even clear on the answers yourself?

Of course, these are just 5 questions. Which would you add to the mix?

Until next time,
Simon
