Are we debating what matters?
How great leadership teams turn disagreement into decisions that stick

For CEOs by invitation only.
Numbers kept small to allow discussion - all under "Chatham House Rules"
Hosted by Simon Dowling
Most executive teams are made up of smart, capable leaders. Yet even the most experienced teams can struggle to debate the issues that matter most.
People hold back because it feels like stepping onto someone else's turf. Disagreement gets avoided, becomes personal, or gets resolved one-on-one with the CEO. Decisions are made outside the room, or quietly reopened after the meeting.
Constructive debate is one of the defining capabilities of an effective executive team. The best teams know what deserves collective debate, how to challenge each other productively, and how to turn different perspectives into decisions everyone can get behind.
So what does it take to build a genuine capability for productive debate around the executive table?
This virtual roundtable is an exclusive opportunity to join a small group of CPOs from non-competing companies for a candid, facilitated conversation about the role of debate in effective executive teams.
Together, we'll explore:
- What deserves debate? How do we distinguish the issues that genuinely require collective debate from those that don't?
- What does good debate look like? What helps experienced executives challenge each other openly and constructively, and what gets in the way?
- How do we make decisions stick? What does it take to move from robust disagreement to a clear decision and genuine collective commitment?
- What role do we play? How might our own behaviours as CPOs and execs encourage productive debate, or unintentionally shut it down?
Drawing on over 20 years experience working with executive teams, I'll share practical insights, useful frameworks and thought-provoking prompts to stimulate and deepen the conversation. We'll combine these with candid peer discussion, so everyone leaves with fresh perspectives and practical ideas for strengthening the quality of debate around their own executive table.
As places are limited, participation is subject to confirmation. To encourage candid discussion, we won't include participants from competing organisations in the same session unless both parties agree. Stay tuned and we'll confirm your place by email!
